The 2015 World Junior Championships kicked off today in Toronto and Montreal. (No early morning games for us Stateside this year!) The tournament opened with a tight match between Finland and the USA.

Finland, the defending champions, have a loaded roster featuring highly touted Dallas Stars prospect Julius Honka, Penguins prospect Kasperi Kapanen, and Jesse Puljujarvi, a forward thought to be among the top prospects for the 2016 NHL draft.

The US team features lots of talent that fans of Minnesota hockey should be interested in aside from the presumed #2 and #3 draft picks for the 2015 draft — Jack Eichel and Noah Hanifin. Among those of interest should be University of Minnesota Golden Gopher star and Apple Valley, MN native Hudson Fasching, 2014 Minnesota Wild first round draft pick Alex Tuch, and Bloomington, MN native / Golden Gopher Ryan Collins.

The US team won the game in a shootout with an impressive performance from Boston College goaltender Thatcher Demko. The great news for Wild fans was that the only US goal scored in regulation was a Tuch goal, scored off a pretty fantastic feed from Eichel. Watch the play on this Vine below.
