Tonight the Minnesota Wild take on the Chicago Blackhawks at United Center in Chicago. The game’s set to start at 7pm CST.

If you read Alex’s game recap of yesterday’s afternoon loss to the Nashville Predators you know that things are getting ugly for the Wild. Yes, things have been ugly, but it’s getting worse.

The losses are mounting, the team hasn’t won back-to-back games since November 16 and 20, Yeo’s practice tantrum got through to some of the team — the team has been better in terms of shots and possession in games since then, but the goaltending remains atrocious.

Even though Darcy Kuemper has played pretty poorly for most of the season, his landing on IR this week doesn’t help things at all. There’s not a better option for the team. Niklas Backstrom has been worse and the next in line is John Curry.

With the Wild having fallen to last place in the Central Division and third to last in the conference, the urgency is ratcheting up as the team would need to go 26-12-4 to guarantee a playoff spot. It also means that every divisional game is an increasingly important game. While the team is very unlikely to catch Chicago, taking two points out of the pocket of divisional opponents and dropping them into their own kitty will start to ease the burden ahead. (A win today makes the above record 25-12-4… a small thing, but winning now makes the number they have to hit less oppressive. 25-12-4 is tough, but looks a lot better than 26-11-4 after a Sunday loss.)
