Pre-Game Skate: Wild Stats, TSN Radio Analytics, & More

facebooktwitterreddit

It’s a slow night in the NHL following last night’s melee, with only the Islanders and Hurricanes playing. But before we take a look around the league, here are a few of my favorite stats from last night’s drubbing of the Avalanche.

The Avalanche were only shutout once last season. They’ve currently been shutout in 100% of their games in the 2014-15 season.

  • Kyle Brodziak and Jason Zucker had a Corsi For% of 100%. The Avalanche didn’t even generate a shot attempt while they were on the ice (at even strength) last night.
  • Only two Wild players had negative possession numbers last night. Matt Dumba and Christian Folin. Both had a rough start to the game, but looked much more comfortable toward the end.
  • The Wild are 12-0-2 in home openers all time.

  • Both Zach Parise and Mikael Granlund set career-bests with a plus-4 plus/minus.
  • Five goals is the biggest winning margin in a Wild home opener ever.

The Wild’s 48 shots were a franchise record. The previous franchise record of 47 was against the Avalanche in 2002.

It was certainly a great start to the season, but beating the Avs as bad as they did means that Saturday’s game should be a dog fight with the Avalanche looking for all kinds of revenge in their home opener.

TSN is set to debut the first analytics-focused NHL radio show. The program will air Saturdays on TSN Radio and will feature Jamie McLennan, Travis Yost, Scott Cullen, and James Mirtle.

Speaking of analytics, Jim Matheson tweeted this out last night:

It’s probably best ignored, but this is that kind of argument that is actually antithetical to the people he’s trying to troll. It’s a sample size issue that he’s not acknowledging. It’s a bit like people who say Well, it snowed yesterday, so how could global warming be real?

    Notes and Notes

    – The Flames are losing first round draft pick Sam Bennet for 4-6 months after they announced yesterday that he’ll be having shoulder surgery. That’s a loss for the Flames and potentially a big lost for Team Canada at the World Juniors tournament.

In other injury news: The Rangers are losing Dan Boyle for 3-6 weeks after he took a shot to the hand last night against the Blues.

Evander Kane looks like he may miss some time as well after going knee to knee with a teammate in the Jets’ win over the Coyotes last night.

    – Speaking of James Mirtle, he posted this gem of a tweet on the Oilers’ PK last night.

    – This just because, well, watch it.

That’s all for today’s Pre-Game Skate. It’s a short one and I’ll be MIA over the weekend. More news, non-sense, and tweets on Monday.
