Minnesota Wild: Forward prospect Mason Shaw agrees to a two-year, two-way contract
The Minnesota Wild reached agreement with another prospect this week.
Forward Mason Shaw , who was drafted in the fourth round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft (No. 97 overall) signed a two-way, two year-contract on Tuesday.
Shaw had eight goals and 22 points in 30 games with the Iowa Wild last year. The Lloydminister, Alberta, native tied for third on the team in scoring and fourth in goals. He has 19 goals and 61 points in four seasons in Des Moines.
With a two-way contract there are two different salaries associated with a player and they are dependent on if he is on an organization’s NHL roster or AHL roster. Shaw’s contract terms are $750,000/$100,000 in 2021-22 and $750,00/$125,000 in 2022-23.
Before Iowa, Shaw had 47 goals and 163 points in three seasons with the Medicine Hat Tigers in the Western Hockey League from 2014-17. He also had 142 penalty minutes during that span.
He also played for Canada at the 2016 IIHF Under-18 World Junior Championship. He had a goal and seven points in seven games during the tournament.
The Hockey Writers said of Shaw ahead of the draft:
Mason Shaw may be the most peculiar player in the entire 2o17 draft class. He is simultaneously three things among the crop of first-time draft eligible players: he’s one of the oldest, one of the smallest, and one of the most offensively talented players in his draft class. The diminutive forward has progressed quite a bit during his time in the Western Hockey League and has quietly emerged as one of the best pure offensive players in Western Canada.Typically, WHL forwards become accustomed to the size and speed of the opposing players and become strong offensive players because they can physically overpower their opponents. Shaw’s 5’9″. He’s probably not overpowering too many players. He just out-wits them, out-manuevers them and out-skills them.
The Wild signed the left-handed shooter to a three-year , entry-level contract in April 27, 2018 and he has battled injuries throughout his hockey career. He injured his left knee in Game 3 of an AHL playoff series against Milwaukee in April 2019 and had surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament the next month.
It was the second time in his career that Shaw tore his left ACL during his career. He also tore his right one in a developmental camp in 2017.
Shaw’s best season in Des Moines came during the 2018-19 season when he had eight goals and 33 points in 76 games.
