Wild vs. Islanders: Set for the return of Zach Parise to St. Paul
The Minnesota Wild return to St. Paul on Sunday night as does a former franchise cornerstone player who is now an opponent.
The Wild host the New York Islanders on the heels of an overtime win in Pittsburgh on Saturday. And Zach Parise will sport his familiar No. 11 but this time it will be on an Isles blue and orange sweater.
The 37-year-old forward signed a one-year contract with the Eastern Conference team after the Wild bought out his contract this summer as well as Ryan Suter’s. The two had both been high-profile free agent signings on July 4, 2012.
Parise had 199 goals and 401 points over nine seasons with the Wild. The Minneapolis native has two assists in nine games with the Islanders and talked to The Athletic’s Michael Russo about his feelings of a return to the Xcel Energy Center.
Series history
The Wild have won 14 of the 27 all-time matchups between the two teams and have an 8-4-2 mark at the Xcel Energy Center.
The Islanders beat the Wild 3-1 in the last matchup on Dec. 29, 2019, in St. Paul.
Parise is not the only Islanders player with Minnesota connections.
Left wingers Kieffer Bellows and Anders Lee are both from Edina, and Cal Clutterbuck was selected by Minnesota in the third round of the NHL Entry Draft in 2006.
Lineups
It looks like the Minnesota Wild are getting two players back who were in the league’s COVID-19 protocol.
