Charlie Coyle Signs Five-Year Extension with Minnesota Wild

Minnesota Wild forward Charlie Coyle has signed a five-year contract extension, which will last until the end of the 2019-2020 season.

The contract is worth $16 million, with an average annual value of $3.2 million.

The 6-foot-three 222-pound native of Weymouth, Massachusetts is currently on the last year of his entry-level-contract. He joins defenseman Jonas Brodin in agreeing to a multi-year extension. Also in the last year of his entry-level-contact, Brodin signed for an additional six years. This is useful to the club, as it will not have to negotiate with both players simultaneously in the last year of this extension.

Originally a San Jose Sharks draft pick (28th Overall in 2010), Coyle was traded to the Minnesota Wild in the package that brought Brent Burns to San Jose. Coyle has collected a goal and an assist in four games this season, and is a plus-three.

111 games into his NHL career, Coyle has scored 21 goals and added 25 assists for 46 points. He played NCAA hockey for the Boston University Terriers from the 2010-11 season until part-way through 2011-2012, when he joined the Saint John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. That season he proceeded to win MVP for the QMJHL playoffs, tallying 34 points in 17 games. This showed the potential of Coyle as a performer in big games.

He showed character in the 2014 playoffs as he tallied seven points in 13 games, and averaged 17:50 time-on-ice per game, while playing with both shoulders separated. He utilized his size, despite the injuries, doling out 31 hits against the Colorado Avalanche and Chicago Blackhawks over the playoffs.
