In the State of Minnesota, there has always been a sense of pride when it comes to ‘hockey’. That’s why we lead the entire nation in developing NHL players and is why the Minnesota Wild is well-supported.

Many outsiders believe they have great hockey teams…such as North Dakota with UND or Wisconsin with the Badgers. However, have they ever taken a step back and looked at their roster?

Majority of their players come from two places; Canada or Minnesota.

I’ll stop there and not criticise out-of-state college teams, however I’m trying to make a point that we are truly ‘The State of Hockey’ and it is NOT just a quote or title.

Just look at the number of Minnesotans at USA Hockey All-American Prospect games over the years.

Our culture here in Minnesota is anything but generic.

Especially when it comes to playing hockey in the backyard ‘homemade’ rinks when it’s -30 degrees out or when it comes to skipping school to go watch the High School Hockey State Tournament.

Did I forget to mention parents getting their children on skates before they can even walk?

Honestly, hockey is what brings Minnesota together during the long and harsh winter months. So why, when it comes to our Minnesota Wild, are we so lame, boring and traditional?

Let me give you a few examples.

First of all we have a goal song from the 1980’s that instead of getting people pumped up, it’s out of rhythm, not catchy, and out of date. Look around – most of our fan base is too young to even know the song.

Instead, why don’t we choose a song like we had before, which was ‘Crowd Chant’ by Joe Satriani.

At least this song was catchy and the entire stadium could chant along. Now nobody sings along, the clapping is out of sync and the song is so quiet, the entire rink feels awkward.

Secondly, stemming off the goal song; can we get a fun atmosphere in the Xcel like Nashville, Winnipeg, Washington, or even St. Louis has?

At least when St. Louis scores – the entire crowd cheers, fog machines go off, strobe lights flash in the opponents’ crease and the arena is alive.

Here in the Xcel; we score, play awful music and it’s back to the drop of the puck.

I know. I know. Hockey isn’t all about the exciting bells and whistles…but these couple songs would be 10 times better:

‘We Dem Boyz’ by Wiz Khalifa
‘Bro Hymn’ by Pennywise
‘GDFR’ feat. Sage The Gemini & Lookas

What do you think, fellow Minnesota Wild fans? Should the goal song be switched up to something a bit more catchy and modern?
