After an entire offseason of dancing around the subject, Quinn Hughes has finally commented on his future and whether the Minnesota Wild factor into it.
With just a few weeks to go before teams report to training camp, the biggest box on Minnesota's priority remains unchecked. As things stand now, Quinn Hughes is set to play the final year of his contract out and hit unrestricted free agency next July.
That sounds scary, but it's not the whole story.
Re-signing Hughes jumped to the top of the list for Minnesota the second they traded a haul to acquire him from Vancouver last fall. Rushing the process, as much as it would ease minds and relieve anxiety in the State of Hockey, was never going to be how that deal got done.
It's unnerving that Hughes is still without an extension but there's not yet a reason to panic and assume he's as good as gone.

"This is going to be done whenever I feel like it needs to be done. I don't feel backed up against a wall. I'm very thoughtful. I want to make sure I'm taking my time on everything and make sure I'm making a decision that is going to be good for everyone," Hughes said.
Taken at face value, this seems like a bad thing. The fact that Hughes isn't ready to commit long-term to Minnesota is an uneasy feeling, but that's an ungenerous reading of his quote. The kind of reading they do over in New Jersey.
Hughes elaborated that he truly wants to do what is right for himself, and that waiting this long -- or longer -- doesn't disqualify the Wild from being the team he commits to.
"We haven't had that many conversations just because of how I wanted my summer to go in terms of being fresh and resetting and enjoying and training and being around friends and family. As we get going here, I'm sure it'll heat up, but I don't feel backed up against a wall where I have to sign before camp."
This is exactly where Wild fans should want Hughes, and it's not entirely unfamiliar territory. We all went through this less than a year ago with Kirill Kaprizov, and look at how that ended. Just like this situation, we were inundated with reports and rumors that Kaprizov was planning on leaving for the Rangers only to have him reach a deal at his own pace.
Hughes is following the same approach, and it lines up with the type of player he is. Everything he does is exacting and deciding where to commit part of the prime of his career should be something he takes seriously.

And again, don't listen to Devils fans high on their own supply. Hughes waiting this long isn't a slight against Minnesota, which is something he made sure to note when addressing the situation.

Said it was important for him to unplug in the summer after a very heavy 2025-26 season, so talks are in relatively early stages with Bill Guerin.
Furthermore, Hughes pointed to Brock Faber and John Hynes as "big draws" for him when it comes to why he'd choose the Wild.
Rushing this process was never going to be in the cards. Hughes isn't that type of player. To channel Cris Collinsworth, here's a guy who sits on the bench and stares into space during games while God knows what cycles through the hockey machine of his mind. If he had decided to re-sign right away, that might not have been as great of a sign as Wild fans would have liked even if it would have taken care of a massive piece of business straightaway this offseason.
Instead, if Hughes does decide to re-sign -- which it seems likely he will -- then the amount of time and thought he's put into things will be a bigger endorsement than we could have ever hoped for.
